Symptoms
While the precise cause of NSF is not known the following are symptoms indicating that one may have NSF. Symptoms may develop quickly or take months. Early signs includes:
- Burning of skin,
- Skin lesions – the lesions are commonly symmetrical, with zones between the ankles and thighs most common followed by involvement between the wrist and upper arms,
- Itching,
- Swelling,
- Hardening or tightening of skin,
- Red or dark patches on skin, the skin may begin to feel woody and resemble the peel of an orange,
- Yellow spots on whites of eyes,
- Stiffness in joints and trouble moving or straightening the hands, arms, legs, or feet. Severely affected patients may be unable to walk, stand up straight or fully extend the joints of their arms, hands, legs, and feet,
- Deep bone pain in the hips or ribs,
- Muscle weakness,
- Unexplained High Blood Pressure (often prior to the onset of the skin lesions).
